Understanding 407 ETR Charges

When you drive on Ontario’s 407 ETR toll highway, you’ll be automatically billed for each trip—the highway operates 100% cashless. Here’s what you need to know:

  • Tracking your travel
Your drive is recorded via transponder or license plate recognition. Toll costs are calculated based on vehicle class, distance traveled, and time of day.
  • Your responsibility to pay
    • Without a transponder, your license plate and vehicle registration are matched, and an invoice is sent to the vehicle’s registered owner.
    • It’s the user’s duty to cover all tolls, administrative fees, and applicable penalties. Ignoring invoices can lead to late fees and potential legal action.
  • Invoices & payment methods
Invoices are issued monthly and include: trip breakdown, toll totals, admin fees, and any late-payment penalties. Payments can be made to 407 via:
    • Online (credit card or bank account)
    • Mail
    • Phone
    • In-person at designated locations
  • Avoiding extra charges
    • Consider using a transponder for faster billing and reduced administration costs.
    • Pay invoices promptly to avoid late fees and collection notices.
